Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts presented a proclamation on Monday, September 18, 2023, to the local Captain William Edmiston Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), in recognition of U.S. Constitution Week.
On hand at Clarksville City Hall on behalf of DAR were Cynthia Smith, and "Martha Washington" (Diana Anderson).
The U.S. Constitution, the guardian of American liberties, was drafted by Constitutional Convention 236 years ago, on September 17. Therefore, the President of the United States has designated the week of September 17-23 as "Constitution Week."
Mayor Pitts, recognizing Constitution Week in the City of Clarksville by proclamation, asks all Clarksville residents to reaffirm the ideals that the framers of the Constitution had in 1787.
As another memento of the occasion, the Tennessee Society DAR presented Mayor Pitts and the City with a framed copy of the State Poem, "Oh Tennessee, My Tennessee," written by Adm. William Lawrence. The poem honoring the state's beauty and Volunteer spirit is 50 years old.
The Captain William Edmiston Chapter of DAR will be 110 years old in 2024, and joins the nationwide organization in preparations for the 250th anniversary of America.
